Global warming thwarted by bacteria!

12.15.2009 · Posted in Current Events

Is Global Warming real? Maybe. Do we care? Not anymore. Why? Bacteria, that's why. In a nut shell scientists have found a way to tell bacteria to eat CO2 and turn it into fuel. Which then will make more CO2 which will then be eaten and turned into fuel. What does that sound like? Sounds like an ecosystem to me and the main reason why we should just chill out about the big bad global warming mess. Yes, hackers broke into some emails and revealed some shady looking exchanges. They went live with it and everyone went up in arms about how all the global warming talk was faked. Well, doesn't look like it was faked but certainly throws some confusion on the whole mess. Most climatologists say that the Earth is heating up and it's caused by all the extra CO2 and other gases being thrown into the atmosphere (anyone remember when it was the ozone being depleted? ahh those were the days) and that causes a greenhouse effect to heat up the earth. Other scientists, who are normally not climatologists, ... More

Washington Redskins Heartbreaking loss to the Saints

12.07.2009 · Posted in Sports

I watched the Washington Redskins vs the New Orleans Saints today, December 5th, 2009, in much the same way all other Skins fans did. Waiting in total dread for the Saints to go up 21-0 in the first half. It was with some mild shock that I watched the Saints go 3 and out on their first possession. Even more so when the Skins jumped to an early 10-0 lead. I came back down to earth in the last few seconds of the second half when the Saints ripped the ball from Moore and ran in for a touchdown. The whole game was that way. Highs of "oh my god we are going to beat the 11-0 saints" to "oh my god we just fucking missed an 18 yard field goal attempt". For all the bads and all the goods of the day, it was one HELL of a football game. For whatever you say about the day's performance of our beloved Redskins, you have to admit, they have some heart. More heart than they have had in years is pumping through ... More

Kimbo vs Alexander went the distance

Can you believe that? Who would have thought that Kimbo Slice vs Houston Alexander would go the distance. Here I am shitting bricks at that fight. I also never would have thought that a Kimbo/Alexander fight would have been an MMA fight instead of a stand up brawl. But that is exactly what it was. Alexander had a strategy. Circle, work the front leg of Kimbo. Period. He was not the Houston Alexander that destroyed Keith Jardine. He was not the tiger, the dragon, the animal that we're used to seeing. Why? Respect, that's why. Houston respected the power of Kimbo. He respected it so much that it cost him the fight. All that circling that Alexander did was countered by, who the hell knew, some pretty damn good ground game from Kimbo. In the second round he took Alexander to the ground and damn near submitted him. He had his back, put in choke holds, and damn if he didn't have leg hooks in. If you don't know what any of that means, it's all MMA speak. That's Mix Martial Arts. I happen ... More

Mind controlled technology is not just coming – its here

There are two new products on the market today. Both share one very cool thing in common. They don't have touchscreens, voice commands or hand controllers. You make them work by using your brain alone. Yes, that's right, you just think and the game does something. Am I the only person who is both totally geeked out and just a little bit terrified by this? This isn't some neat new high falutent gizmo coming down the pipe in a few years, these are here, now, you can buy them today and be friggin brain controlling something by the end of the week. The two items are a game system from the guys at http://www.Emotiv.com and a neat toy from these folks http://www.unclemilton.com/starwarsscience/ . With the Emotiv device, it's a game on the scale of something like World of Warcraft. Yes, you can play a WoW clone with your thoughts. Probably be able to play WoW in 3-4 years like this. The other game is a simple ball hovering in a tube, that you make hover by thinking. In the mid-80's no ... More

Climate Gate and the new adventures of an old argument

12.04.2009 · Posted in Culture, Current Events

Well, I'm sure you've heard by now about Climategate. A hacker broke into a database and several email accounts for some climatologists and revealed some interesting stuff. Does it mean anything? Does it matter? What is really going on with our climate? I think if anything all this data means is we don't know exactly what is going on. Does the climate change, getting hotter and colder? Yes! We KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Earth was once covered with Ice. We know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was once hotter than it is now. So, nailed it, give me a fruit smoothie and I'm off to eat Chinese food. Is it really that simple? Is anything? No. Of course not. How silly of you. It's true we are using oil and coal and they do have some negative impacts. Oil spills are generally considered to be a bad thing, even by Oil tycoons. Coal, well, need I say more than simply 'coal.."? Dan Aykroyd once lived in a mansion that sat on top of an ... More
