Lone Bloggers vs blogging sites

01.03.2010 · Posted in Everyday Life

I am somewhat new to the blogging world. I have only been at this for a year and a half or so. In that time I have managed to squeak out 63 posts, 40 or so comments and a Google Pagerank of 3. In and of itself, a 3 isn’t so bad, but 63 posts in a year plus isn’t so great. Especially when you compare that to a statistic I read recently where Engadget, or maybe it was Dvice or Techcrunch, had posted a whopping 12,000+ blog posts in the year 2009. 12,000! Thats 1000 posts a month, about 33 posts a day. In just a short two days time those big sites have posted more than I have in a year plus.

In truth, its really just a neat play on numbers. I am not a professional level website with an army of fact checkers, writers, editors and all other soldiers you would need for the content wars that’s currently raging on the internet. But examples have shown us where some intrepid individuals can enter into that fight and come out on top. Most are already famous of course, given them an advantage. Perez Hilton is the one that comes to mind as someone who was really nobody before he found a laptop and a coffee shop.

That leads me to one of several new years resolutions. Tying together the Tim Ferris four hour work week and the desire to have a successful blog, I am going to engage in more active blogging while only spending one to two hours a day doing it. The big question is how much can you write in a one to two hour sitting. As it happens, I love to write. It’s fun and a way to relieve stress. I’m also very opinionated, pig headed and stubborn, so says my wife at times, which should make for a fast paced unyielding opinions on things. Of course, I don’t have an army of fact checkers so not everything will be so accurate. But who cares, I don’t have an editor to answer to, it’s just me and my bottle of scotch talkin here.

That all said, my goal is to start posting at least one post a day. If that works out I will start posting more per day until reaching a 33 post in one day event. That is 33 real posts not “Hi, it’s sunny outside, care for a bath?” but real posts on real topics that I find interesting. Each post will have to be at least 400 words with a goal of 600. I’d like to see if I can hit the 33 mark by years end but hopefully much sooner.

In order to post that much dribble some of it may be personal, some of it professional, most of it meaningless banter. On the personal side of things my wife is pregnant so at least I can share that experience as we go.Should be fun, probably embarrassing, most certainly entertaining!

Happy blogging.
