Google Chrome OS is NOT a game changer

Sorry to burst any bubbles out there, but Google Chrome OS is anything but a game changer. I recently visited techcrunch.com and was wow’ed by all the talk of Chrome OS and how Microsoft is shaking in their boots. Are you kidding me? Lets set some records straight here.

Chrome OS will be very fast, completely internet focused. It will be cool, don’t get me wrong. I will likely purchase a Chrome OS netbook. The only purpose it will serve for me surfing the net. Is that all I do on a computer? Not even close.

First off, I play games. For gamers, this is not even a blip on the radar. Who cares if it’s internet only. You have basically iced yourself out of all gamer’s in the world. You can’t play any MMO, you can’t play any FPS. Those types of applications require actual downloads to a computer and installs.

Ok, so what about all the non-gamers? Well, first, you aren’t going to be editing any pictures on it, doing any coding on it, or anything else that requires any type of install. Got MS office? Tough, Chrome OS won’t run it. Love the Mac? Too bad, all those apps are gone.

Google is right and wrong about the internet taking over the world. Sure, lots of apps are going to move to a SaaS philosophy but a lot of application won’t too. There are a ton of applications out there that require a meaty computer to run. And what about the business sector? Forget it. Not one business in the world will be able to use this except for anything but a neat web browsing computer. Corporations have database software, domain servers, custom applications, you name it. They require some type of processing power on a PC.

Sorry to burst any bubbles out there, but a game changer this is not. As I said, it will be very cool, I will get one, but only to do my web surfing. Everything else, i’m still requiring a PC, a hard drive and everything else that comes with it.

And that is with me assuming that Chrome OS will have DVD support. Forget about iTunes support of course, though if Spotify ever makes it to the US, that won’t be such a big deal.

Windows, Mac and Ubuntu have their places and fill a need. Chrome OS will fill a niche for sure, but it wont’ dislodge the major players. Most people will add it as a nice to have but no way is it a replacer.
